What You Can Operate with Each License


12-Mile License:
Allows you to operate both sailboats and motorboats within 12 miles from the coast.


Unlimited License:
Allows you to operate both sailboats and motorboats beyond 12 miles from the coast.
This license is also known as “Category A.”


How the Exam Works

You obtain your license by completing two tests:

Written Test
• 4 chart-plotting exercises
• 20 multiple-choice questions
• +5 additional questions for those choosing the sailing license

Practical Test
• 10 on-water sessions to demonstrate to the commission everything you’ve learned.


Remember: every candidate must meet the following requirements to be eligible to take the nautical license exam.
